Scripture, the Bible, the word of God - whatever we like to call it - is at the centre of everything the Church does. It's in our prayer and worship, how we understand the world, how we are called to live and how we relate to each another.

The year 2020 will be the 10th anniversary of Verbum Domini - Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation on ‘The Word of the Lord’ and the 1,600 anniversary of St Jerome’s death.

These events in the life of the Church have motivated the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to make 2020 a year of focus on the Bible and 'The God Who Speaks'.

During the year, we will be celebrating, living and sharing God‘s word with an exciting new initiative. It's an opportunity to enrich current practice and to develop and explore new ways of responding to 'The God who Speaks'.

Throughout the year there will be a range of events, activities and resources to participate in all around the country.

To help achieve transformation in our hearts and in our communities there will be three themes of celebratingliving and sharing God’s word.

In Southwark, throughout the year, we hope to offer range of events, activities and creative resources. If there is something in particular that you would like to see or help develop, please get in touch.

Also, ahead of 2020 Year of the Word, the Bishops’ Conference would like to hear how people currently make use of Holy Scripture.  The information, which is submitted anonymously, will help them to plan events and resources that will help you and those you meet to hear more effectively The God Who Speaks.
